Dons must win in Inverness..
The Dons top six destiny is no longer in their own hands after last weeks home draw with St. Mirren. All they can do is attempt to win their last two matches and hope that Falkirk slip up against Kilmarnock this weekend. Ultimately the Dons European ambitions are still alive if they can win the semi final match against Queen of the South in a few weeks, but Jimmy Calderwood would still be hoping to keep his top six record intact since he arrived at Pittodrie. It's still all to play for but Aberdeen know that they must win in Inverness this Saturday and if possible, bang a few goals in, if they are to have any chance of finishing ahead of Falkirk.
Jimmy had some good news on Zander Diamond at lunchtime as the central defender tries to recover from his last meeting with the elbows of Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Jimmy said, "Fortunately things are not as bad as we first thought. He has been to hospital and the cheekbone is not fractured. He will see an eye specialist in the next couple of days and he could well be back in contention next week. Zander has had a wonderful season and he still has youth on his side. He went through a bad spell for a short while but now he is back to his best and hopefully he will be available for the semi final.
"Unfortunately the news on the rest of the long term injuries is not so good and is much the same as last week. Stuart Duff is back and he should go into the squad for Inverness, but Lovell, de Visscher, Diamond, Byrne, Jamie Smith and Derek Young are still all out. Smith and Young are improving and are doing well running but Jamie called in ill this week so that might set him back a couple of days."
Redfact: Inverness Caledonian Thistle are one of two SPL clubs that have never beaten the Dons in a competitive match. The other is Gretna who have lost twice at Pittodrie this season and claimed a draw at Fir Park earlier in the campaign.
Jimmy turned his attention to this weekend and the task his side face. "All we can do is go to Inverness and try and win a very difficult game. This will be a different sort of pressure for Falkirk and we will have to see how they cope. Last week was frustrating after the Celtic win. We now need to concentrate our efforts on Saturday. Craig (Brewster) had Inverness going well until a few weeks ago. I'm not sure what happened because you can't say looking in from the outside.
"One thing I do know is that Craig will be hurting and he will have his lads up for this. They are a very difficult team to play against and they will be dangerous. They are desperate for a result but we just have to try and win the game by hook or by crook. Our unbeaten run against Inverness has to end sometime but hopefully it won't be this weekend."
Redquote: "There is no point in us keeping a look out for the Falkirk match if we don't win at Inverness. All we can do is look after our own game and be there to take advantage if Falkirk do happen to slip up." Sone Aluko
